Hilario Orozco Lemus, a resident of Cerano, Guanajuato, Mexico, passed away on 5 August, at the age of 111 years, 275 days.

Hilario Orozco Lemus was born at a ranch in Las Tortugas, Puruándiro, Michoacán, Mexico, on 3 November 1913. Hilario grew up in poverty in Las Tortugas, Michoacán, where his father worked with livestock and his mother sold soap and salt. In 1915, he moved with his mother and sister to Cerano, Guanajuato, to live with his grandmother. A year later, his mother died during the influenza pandemic. Soon after, his father brought Hilario and his sister back to Michoacán, where they began school in Puruándiro. In 1920, Hilario’s father died after being struck by lightning. From a young age, Hilario worked caring for animals and farming corn.

In May 1936, he married Eloisa Serrano Fonceca. The couple had 11 children (seven daughters and four sons). After their marriage they lived in several places including Jacales, Cerano, Puruandiro, Galeana and Janamuato. After a while, they bought a house in Jacales and lived there for a long time. They were married for almost 80 years, until Eloisa passed away on 17 April 2016, one month before their wedding anniversary.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Hilario Orozco Lemus during this difficult time.
