Hazel Mary Schultz, a resident of Post Falls, Idaho, and the state’s oldest person ever, passed away on 27 May, at the age of 112 years, 135 days.
Hazel Schultz was born as Hazel Mary Anthony in Mozart, Saskatchewan, Canada, on 12 January 1913. She was the eldest child of Clarence Joseph Anthony (1892 – 1990) and Dagmar Iwerson (1891 – 1993). Her Wisconsin-born father had French-Canadian ancestry, while her mother was born in Iceland. Remarkably, both parents lived long lives, reaching the ages of 98 and 101, respectively. Additionally, Hazel had a younger brother, Floyd Joseph, who sadly died in 1952, just eight days short of his 38th birthday.
Following a devastating tornado that swept away their Saskatchewan farm, Hazel and her family relocated to the United States in 1922, eventually settling in Bellingham, Washington. Years later, on 16 May 1941, she married Herbert Philip Schultz, who was nine years her junior. Together, they had three children: Douglas, Gary, and Cheryl. Notably, both of her sons went on to become doctors.
On 28 July 2024, at the age of 111 years, 198 days, she surpassed the final age of Sara “Sally” Ashman, becoming Idaho’s oldest known person ever.
