Jane Benington, a resident of Belfast, Northern Ireland, passed away on 10 May, at the age of 108 years, 13 days. Her passing was reported by Funeral Times.

Benington was born on 27 April 1917 in Carland Manse, near Cookstown in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. She was one of seven children of Reverend Joseph McCausland, a Presbyterian minister. Her family later moved to Kilmacrenan in County Donegal for a time, and then settled in Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, where Jane attended Enniskillen Collegiate School.

Following her schooling, she enrolled in a catering college in Glasgow, but soon decided to pursue a career in nursing. She trained in Birmingham and later qualified as a midwife. Jane then spent a period working as a nurse in Malta before eventually returning home.

After retiring from the health service, she went to help out in a residential home. It was there that she met her husband, Arnold Bennington. Sadly, Arnold passed away just two years after they were married.

On 17 March 2025, following the passing of 109-year-old Agnes Thompson, she became the oldest living person in Northern Ireland.

According to the Oldest in Britain website, which tracks the nation’s oldest living residents, the oldest known living person in Northern Ireland is believed to be Margaret McMordie, born on 14 January 1918.
