Annie Sjöström, a resident of Borgholm, Kalmar County, Sweden, and the nation’s oldest resident, passed away on 23 April, at the age of 110 years, 125 days. Her passing was confirmed by Ratsit.
Annie Sjöström was born on 19 December 1914, in Gunnarslund on the island of Öland, Kalmar County, Sweden. She grew up in a large family with 12 children. On their croft, the family kept a horse, a cow, a pig, and some chickens. By the age of seven, Annie was already helping out by milking cows. From an early age, she worked for others, including in the household of the Gerlofsson family in Lofta. She delivered food to them daily and fed their horses with bread. As a young woman, Annie took on a variety of jobs, working as a nanny, maid, and household helper.
At some point, she married Verner Sjöström, who was from Blekinge. The couple settled there and had two children, a daughter, Ulla, and a son, Rolf. After her husband’s passing in 1977, Annie relocated to Borgholm the following year. Over the course of her life, Annie worked in a range of roles, including at the mirror factory in Fröseke, the Champinjonen discothèque in Borgholm, and in the kitchen at Hotell Borgholm.
On 16 November 2024, following the passing of 112-year-old Agnes Boström, she became the oldest living person in Sweden, at the age of 109 years, 333 days.
It is believed that her successor as the nation’s oldest resident is 109-year-old Birgit Johansson, born on 9 December 1915, and currently residing in Göteborg.
