Luigia Mercalli, the oldest living person in Sardinia, Italy, is celebrating her 110th birthday today, according to L’Unione Sarda.it.

Luigia (Luisetta) Mercalli was born on 17 January 1915, in Carloforte, Sardinia. She pursued her education at the Institute of the Carlo Felice Sisters and graduated early from the School of Method for Maternal Education at 16. At 17, she began her teaching career with a short-term substitute position, later specializing in music, choral singing, and home economics. She dedicated 46 years to education, earning a diploma in Professional Teacher Training in Padua and passing the state exam in Rome in 1938.

During World War II, she witnessed the 1943 bombings in Carloforte and assisted the wounded. In 1951, she married artillery officer Luigi Quaquero and moved to Cagliari, where she taught technical education until her retirement in 1979. She had two daughters, Angela and Myriam.

On 20 July 2024, following the passing of Amelia Addari, she became the oldest (known) living person in Sardinia.
