Zorie De Mattos, a resident of Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana, celebrated her claimed 110th birthday on 17 January, as reported by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Zorie De Mattos claims to have been born in the village of Hand-en-Veldt, near Mahaica, Guyana, on 17 January 1915. Some sources indicate her birthplace as Golden Grove. She spent her early years in a convent.
In 1969, she was admitted to a nursing home in Georgetown. She was reportedly left there by an older brother who could no longer care for her. At the age of 105, in 2020, she contracted COVID-19 but made a full recovery within three weeks, experiencing only moderate symptoms and no lasting complications. By the age of 110, it was reported that she had never required hospitalization for any health condition and did not take medication for chronic illnesses.
Her age has not been validated. Currently, the oldest known person in the country is reportedly Evadney Talbot, a resident of nearby Buxton, who is said to have turned 112 on 10 May 2024. Her age has not been officially validated either.
