Schuster was born Mae Augusta Oates in San Antonio, Texas, on 8 August 1914, to parents Thomas and Emma Lou Oates. She had two older sisters, Elva and Annie. Her family lived in San Antonio and several other Texas cities before settling in the small town of Rotan in West Texas, where they remained. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in Balmorhea, Texas, and later attended Texas Tech University until the outbreak of World War II. She met Fredrick Louis Schuster in 1935, and they married a year later. Together, they had one child, Fredrick Louis Schuster, Jr.
For many years, she was a dedicated housewife and mother until her son went to college. She then entered the workforce, taking on roles with various marketing companies. Eventually, she became Sales Manager for H.T. Ardinger Importers at the World Trade Center in Dallas, Texas. In 1984, after nearly 50 years of marriage, her husband passed away in Hubbard, Texas.
