Gladys Pennington, who is currently the oldest (known) living resident of the U.S. state of Washington, celebrated her 110th birthday in Marysville on October 17th. Her birthday was first reported by KING 5 Seattle.
Pennington, born Gladys Mills on October 17, 1914, in Deer Park, Washington, was one of four children of Sarah Anne Jones Mills, a Welsh immigrant, and Jonathan Mills, an immigrant from England.
At the age of five, she and her siblings were placed in an orphanage in Spokane, where she remained for 15 years until graduating from high school in 1932. Afterward, she earned a scholarship to Kinman Business University in Spokane and later attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Eventually, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she applied for a government position at one of the first Social Security offices.
