Farris completed high school and attended college before starting to teach in Electra, Texas. Teaching became her passion for the next 50 years. After marrying, she finished her bachelor’s degree while her husband earned his master’s and became a school superintendent. The couple then had two children.

Farris’s daughter, Charlye, made history as Wichita County’s first female lawyer and Texas’s first black woman judge. Farris retired in 1973 and devoted herself to raising her adopted grandson. A dedicated Christian, she served at Gilbert Memorial C.M.E. Church for over a century as a musician and Sunday school teacher.
