BIOGRAPHY

Sui Naitō was born in Ōgawa Village (now part of Ōizumi), Gunma Prefecture, Japan, on 1 October 1912. She lived through the Great Kanto Earthquake that took place on September 1, 1923, when she was 10 years old. During the quake, she endured the shaking while sheltered in a bamboo thicket. At the age of 110, she still vividly recalled the ground cracking and the house tiles falling.

As of September 2022, she lived in a nursing home in Ota City.

Sui Naitō passed away in Ōta, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, on 14 June 2023, at the age of 110 years, 256 days.

RECOGNITION

On 24 July 2022, following the passing of 111-year-old Shige Kobayashi, she became the oldest living person in Gunma Prefecture.

Upon her passing, she was succeeded as the Prefecture’s oldest living person by Yoshi Kitada.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li, Ryohei Asano, and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 8 February 2024.
