Hoffman was born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, on 21 December 1913. Born near Christmas, her mother made sure her birthday celebration was separate to compensate for the holiday rush. Her father was the violinist in the orchestra at the Elms Hotel. Although she herself didn’t pursue the violin, she did play the piano.
Hoffman graduated as part of the first class from Paseo High School in 1913. Subsequently, she attended Kansas City Junior College for two years. She worked as a secretary, serving as the administrative assistant to the headmaster at Barstow School for Girls.
Hoffman’s first marriage was to Bill Ward, and the couple had a son, Bill Ward Jr. She was widowed in 1979, and in 1990, she married Al Hoffman. With the marriage, she gained a stepdaughter. Her second husband died in 2007, after which she moved to Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas.
When asked about the secret to her longevity, Hoffman attributed it to never smoking.
Hoffman passed away at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas, USA, on 20 April 2024, at the age of 110 years, 121 days.
Hoffman’s age was validated by LongeviQuest on 15 January 2024.
