BIOGRAPHY

Beppu was born in Shibushi, Kagoshima on 28 March 1897. She moved to Hokkaido with her family at the age of eight. She married in 1920 and had five children, two sons and three daughters.

As a centenarian, Beppu did her own housework. She moved into a nursing home at the age of 105 due to weakening legs. She became Kagoshima’s oldest living person upon the death of Mago Nozawa on 12 September 2007.

Beppu died in Soo, Kagoshima, on 17 February 2010 at the age of 112 years, 326 days. She was the second-oldest person ever in the prefecture, and was succeeded as the oldest living person in Kagoshima by Toshi Horiya.

RECOGNITION

Beppu’s age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Hamish Todd, Ken Matsuoka, and Stefan Gelow, and was validated by the GRG on 22 January 2008.
