Tomás Pinales Figuereo was a supercentenarian from the Dominican Republic who, at the time of his passing, was the World’s Oldest Living Man. He is also the oldest known person ever from the Dominican Republic, and among the top 10 oldest men ever.

BIOGRAPHY

Pinales Figuereo was born in Bajos de Haina, a town in the San Cristóbal province of the Dominican Republic, on 31 March 1906. He was one of nine children and outlived all of his siblings. His brother Evaristo passed away sometime between 2012 and 2017. Pinales Figuereo married and went on to father ten children.

He worked at a sugar mill until the early 1950s, when he nearly lost his right thumb in a workplace accident. Although he rarely drank alcohol, he smoked for many decades until developing a lung disease in 1992. He was not fond of dancing.

By his 111th birthday, he had 33 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. All ten of his children were still living, and he resided with his daughter Ramona. Among his extended relatives were Melanio Paredes, a former Minister of Education, and Rolando Guante, a sports columnist for El Nacional.

Pinales Figuereo passed away in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, on 24 September 2020, at the age of 114 years and 177 days.

RECOGNITION

Pinales Figuereo was first noted for his longevity shortly after his 106th birthday. His 111th birthday was reported by the same news outlet, with the article erroneously claiming he was 112.

In May 2017, following the death of Efraín Núñez Núñez, Pinales Figuereo may have become the oldest man in the Dominican Republic.

In January 2019, following the passing of Masazo Nonaka, he was considered a candidate for the title of World’s Oldest Living Man, although Gustav Gerneth of Germany claimed to be older. When Gerneth died on 21 October 2019, Pinales Figuereo was regarded as the oldest known living man with age-supported documentation. Upon his own passing, he was succeeded by Emilio Flores Márquez.

Pinales Figuereo was categorized as ‘pending validation’ by the Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS) on 3 May 2022. The validation process was completed by James Roberts, Fabrizio Villatoro, and Stefan Maglov, with the assistance of his family, and his age was officially validated by LongeviQuest on 27 June 2025.
