Tamotsu Arai was born in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, on 1 August 1915. He began working as a chiropractor in his 30s, offering treatments to relieve ailments such as lower back pain. Even after turning 100, Arai continued to treat patients at his home clinic.
He was mindful of his own health, paying particular attention to his diet. His meals centered around brown rice cooked in a special pot, complemented by seasonal fish and vegetables, all eaten in a well-balanced manner. He also practiced the principle of eating only until he was about 80% full.
According to his son, Arai was widowed at the age of 82, yet he remained positive in the years that followed. He had an optimistic personality and did not dwell on things. He enjoyed talking with others and maintained warm relationships with his former patients and people he had connected with through work. His hobbies included cultivating bonsai and potted plants in his garden, and on his days off, he would sometimes spend the entire day tending to the soil.
His age was verified by Masahiro Yamada and Marco Wikkerink, and validated by LongeviQuest on 13 August 2025.
