BIOGRAPHY

Fujita was born in Kawanoe-cho, Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture, on 1 December 1899. She was married, and bore a son and a daughter.

At the age of 102, Fujita moved into a local nursing home. By the time of her 111th birthday, her younger sister, then aged 98, lived in the same facility. Her family climed that the secret to her longevity was her good posture and not being a picky eater.

In the summer of 2011, Fujita caught pneumonia and was hospitalised for a week, but had fully recovered by September of that year. She died at 9:32 a. m. on 3 August 2012 at the age of 112 years, 246 days. She was survived by her two children, as well as five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

RECOGNITION

Fujita’s age was verified by Stefan Gelow and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), and was validated by the GRG on 22 November 2010.

Fujita was the oldest resident of Ehime following the death of 110-year-old Kikue Yanouchi between January and March 2008. In August 2010, she broke the record of Matsuyo Ouchi to become the oldest person ever to live in the prefecture.

After Fujita’s death, Ehime’s oldest living person was Yoneno Kōno, who went on to surpass her age in April 2015.
