BIOGRAPHY

Sono Yamamoto (山本ソノ) was born on May 20, 1914, in Kiritappu, Hamanaka Town, Hokkaido, Japan. At the age of 23, she married and moved to Nemuro City. Her husband served as the third-generation president of Yamaren, a general trading company in Nemuro City dealing in fisheries, construction materials, and marine supplies. He died in 2007 at the age of 94. The couple had four sons and one daughter, and Yamamoto was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In an interview celebrating her 100th birthday, she shared that she takes nutritional supplements to support her longevity. She expressed gratitude for being surrounded by her family and said she looks forward to seeing her great-grandchildren grow.

As of September 2025, she was the third-oldest living person in Hokkaido, following Michi Kudo and Sadami Matsuoka, and was the oldest resident of Nemuro City.

In September 2026, Yamamoto was the oldest living person in Hokkaido. The mayor of Nemuro City visited her to celebrate her longevity, and on that occasion, her son said that the secret to her longevity was “eating everything.”
