BIOGRAPHY

Fuyo Kishimoto (Japanese: 岸本ふよ) was born in Hamasaka, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, on 20 December 1911.

She experienced the hardships of wartime Japan and raised her children while working hard to make a living. According to her family, she was a hardworking woman who remained active well into her later years.

In her 60s, she moved to Kyoto Prefecture. She later worked at a school lunch center and continued in that role until her mid-80s. For many years, she walked a considerable distance to work each day and did not miss a single day. The strength she built through this routine, along with years of hard work, may have supported her health in later life.

At age 99, she fractured a femur, and at age 100, she sustained a similar injury to the other leg, after which she moved into a nursing home. At age 103, her health declined significantly, and her doctor once gave a grave prognosis. However, she recovered and gradually regained her strength. Even at age 112, she was able to eat regular meals on her own and enjoyed sweet coffee and sweet snacks. She has long been a devoted Buddhist and made it a rule to spend about three hours each day reciting sutras from memory, a practice she faithfully maintained for many years. Even around the age of 112, she would still occasionally recite sutras.

According to her family, she has a gentle personality and continues to express gratitude to those around her.

She is currently the oldest living person in Kyoto Prefecture and the second-oldest living person in Japan.

This biography has been revised to respect her family’s privacy.
