Shike Satō (佐藤シケ) was born in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, on 16 March 1900.
She was the youngest of eight siblings. At the age of 26, she married a company employee and had five children. In 1940, she moved to the Ryōke area of Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, where she lived for many decades.
Gifted with dexterous hands, Satō continued to sew and adorn her own kimonos until the age of 102. Until around the age of 108, she lived in a five-generation household with ten family members. At the age of 110, she was reported to have three surviving children, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Following the passing of 110-year-old Yoshi Kobayashi of Sakado City on 4 July 2009, Satō became the oldest living person in Saitama Prefecture.
Satō passed away from hypoxemia in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, on 22 August 2011, at the age of 111 years, 159 days. After her death, Kō Takayanagi of Kōnosu City succeeded her as the prefecture’s oldest living person.
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 17 April 2010 and later recognized by LongeviQuest.
