Ivey was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, USA, on 2 February 1908.

At some point, she married Charles Ivey, and the couple had two children: John Ivey and Ruth (married Hawkins).

Ivey passed away in at Richmond Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA, on 13 April 2018, at the age of 110 years. She was survived by two great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and her younger half-brother, Bill Woolard. She outlived both of her children, and her only granddaughter.
