Olga de Almeida Fiúza was born in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 23 November 1901. Olga attended the Dom Pedro II State School and the former Normal School of Ouro Preto, graduating in 1925. She had at least one child, Clara Almeida Barbosa. She worked as a teacher and, in her later years as a centenarian, lived in the Anchieta neighborhood of Belo Horizonte.
She cast her first vote in 1932, the year Brazilian women gained the right to vote. Throughout her life, she remained deeply engaged in elections and even expressed a desire to vote in the 2010 Brazilian general elections—at the age of 108. After the end of the military regime and the return of direct presidential elections, she voted for Fernando Collor de Mello in 1989, while living in Rio de Janeiro. She recalled the period as a time of renewed hope and a powerful sense of regained rights after years of dictatorship. She also closely followed the political career of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, saying she “sympathized” with him and “liked him very much.”
Olga de Almeida Fiúza passed away in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, on 12 October 2012, at the age of 110 years, 324 days.
Her age was verified and listed as pending validation by the Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS) organization on 5 May 2022.
