BIOGRAPHY

Marianna Smolarczyk was born in Łubno, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland (then Russian Empire), on 16 February 1897. She grew up with five sisters; her brothers died at an early age. She did not attend school because, as she later recalled, there was no school nearby. At the age of 20, she married Stanisław Smolarczyk, who was from the neighboring village of Korczyn. She worked throughout her life in the fields and on the family farm. She was widowed at the age of 50. The couple had five children.

When asked what one should do to live a long life, she replied: “Thank God for everything, accept your crosses, pray, and live each day God has given you in a Godly way. Work hard and don’t shy away from work. Eat whatever you want. I ate all of that until I was a hundred.”

At the age of 108, her granddaughter said that she followed a relatively light diet. In the morning, she would eat a Kaiser roll and have a cup of cappuccino, followed by a light dinner. She particularly enjoyed buckwheat with milk, pasta with blueberries, as well as tripe and bigos.

Smolarczyk passed away on 30 March 2007 in Łubno, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland, at the age of 110 years and 42 days.
