BIOGRAPHY

Mariana Penna Monteiro was born in Arceburgo, Minas Gerais, Brazil on 2 September 1912. Her parents were Pedro de Souza Penna, from Mococa, and Mariana Gonçalves Penna, from São José do Rio Pardo. She had at least seven siblings: Luiz, Messias, Dalva, Olga, Heloisa, José, and João.

She was born in Arceburgo, but spent most of her childhood and youth in Mococa, in the interior of São Paulo. She later studied in Itú and Campinas, attending the Normal School on Praça Carlos Gomes. After graduating, she began her career as a teacher, working in schools across small towns and on rural farms throughout São Paulo. Those were formative years, as she traveled extensively while still very young, teaching children in countless places.

Her journey stretched from Arceburgo, Minas Gerais, to numerous cities across São Paulo, including Mococa, Itú, São Paulo, Barra Bonita, Campinas, Araraquara, Mirassol, Pereira Barreto, Floreal, Araçatuba, Taquaritinga, Matão, and Itatiba.

It was in Mirassol that she met Orlando Monteiro (1911–1987). They married in 1946 and had three children together: Maria Cristina, Maria Lúcia, and Orlando Monteiro Junior. In the years that followed, she returned to teaching, eventually retiring from the José Inocêncio da Costa School Group in Matão.

Her three children built families of their own, and at 113, she had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
