Mária Höffner was born in Schenborn, Zakarpattia Oblast (then Alsóschönborn, Bereg County, Hungary), Austria-Hungary, on 20 June 1905. She moved to Budapest at the age of 24 and later emigrated to the United States in the 1960s. At the age of 100, she returned to Hungary, driven by a deep sense of homesickness. According to her daughter, Tilda Höffner, the secret to her mother’s longevity was her strong faith, hard work, and a little whisky every morning.
Mária Höffner passed away on 30 July 2016, in Budapest’s 8th district, at the age of 111 years, 40 days.
On 25 September 2014, following the passing of Rezső Gallai, she became the oldest living person in Hungary. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Dezsőné Kovács.
On 12 May 2016, at the age of 110 years, 327 days, she surpassed the final age of Jánosné Kudász, becoming the oldest person ever to live in Hungary. She held the title until 28 October 2018, when Jánosné Bélik surpassed her final age.
Her age has not been validated.
