BIOGRAPHY

Maria Esther Canessa Lawlor was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 1 June 1894, to parents Cesar Canessa (born 1864) and Julia Lawlor McDouglas (1861–1931). Her paternal grandfather was Italian, while her maternal grandfather, William Lawlor (1822–1909), was born in Ireland. She married Agustin Lombardini Sayago (1899–1949), and the couple had two children.

On her 111th birthday in 2005, it was noted that she lived in Montevideo with her family and spent her summers in La Paloma. At the time, she said there was no secret to living so many years, as “everything depends on God,” although she believed that having a good character contributed to her longevity.

Maria Esther Canessa Lawlor passed away in Montevideo, on 1 July 2006, at the age of 112 years, 30 days.

RECOGNITION
