BIOGRAPHY
Margarete Ottmann was born in Jaroniów, Opole Voivodeship, Poland (then Jernau, Germany), on 23 February 1903. She grew up in the Leobschütz district, where she later worked as a master gardener. In February 1945, during World War II, she fled with her children to Neukirchen in the Amberg-Sulzbach district. Her husband passed away there in 1960.
On her 103rd birthday, she was congratulated by District Administrator Armin Nentwig and Neukirchen’s mayor, Winfried Franz. On that occasion, she remarked that she still walked at least 1,000 steps every day and tried to do everything herself.
At the time, she was still living alone in her house and took great pride in her garden. She also expressed deep gratitude to her neighbors and friends, who frequently supported her. Asked about the secret to her longevity, she offered simple advice: avoid sugar, do not smoke, and do not drink alcohol.
Margarete Ottmann passed away in Neukirchen, Bavaria, on 17 August 2014, at the age of 111 years, 175 days. She was survived by her two sons, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
RECOGNITION
At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living person in Bavaria, and the third-oldest person in Germany, after Frieda Szwillus and Johanna Klink.
Ottmann’s age was verified by Marco Wikkerink, and was validated on 27 January 2020.
