Mabel Dunbar was born in Jamaica on 5 September 1914. Her father was a farmer, while her mother stayed home to care for the children. After emigrating to the United States in the 1960s, she lived in New York for over two decades before moving to Florida in 1994. She never married, but she had a daughter, Minora Rosenthal. She had another daughter who died at seven months.
At the age of 109, she didn’t get out much but remained a deeply religious person who loved to cook; she even made her own breakfast every morning. She reportedly had a good memory and enjoyed sharing her stories. Her daughter described her as “a very pleasant person and a big talker.”
When asked about the secret to her longevity, she attributed it to her faith, which she said also guided her decision to remain unmarried. She stated that the Lord told her not to marry because something special was in store for her.
Her age has not been validated.
