Julio César Mora Tapia was born in San Miguel de Salcedo, Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador, on 10 March 1910.
He met his future wife, Waldramina, during one of her school vacations, when she visited her sister who lived in the same building as Julio César. The two were introduced by her sister’s husband, who happened to be Julio César’s cousin. What began as a friendship gradually blossomed into a romantic relationship, culminating in their marriage seven years later, on 7 February 1941. The ceremony was intimate and kept secret, as both families initially disapproved of the union. The wedding took place at La Iglesia de El Belén, a church in Quito. Together, they raised five children, all of whom went on to earn college degrees.
As of 2020, they had 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Julio César Mora Tapia passed away in Quito, on 22 October 2020, at the age of 110 years, 226 days.
The ages of Julio and his wife Waldramina were verified with the help of their daughter, Cecilia Mora, along with researchers Jeffrey Xu and Fabrizio Villatoro. Their ages were officially validated by the Latin American Supercentenarians on 22 June 2020, and their record was recognized by Guinness World Records on 25 August of the same year.
