Hatsue Sabi was born on 20 March 1902, in Kamiikeda Village (in what is now Ikeda Town), Fukui Prefecture, Japan. She worked as a farmer for many years and was blessed with many children and grandchildren. In the early 1980s, after the passing of her husband, she moved to Takefu City (which later merged into Echizen City) to live near her eldest son. Sabi was known for her sharp intellect and enjoyed activities such as playing Othello and solving puzzles.
Sabi passed away of natural causes in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, on 17 August 2012, at the age of 110 years, 150 days.
In 2010, at the age of 108, she was recognized as the oldest living person in Fukui Prefecture. She likely assumed the title following the passing of Matsui Kobayashi (1 February 1899 – June 2010) of Fukui City. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Takio Hamatani.
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano, and validated by LongeviQuest on 2 December 2024.
