BIOGRAPHY

Fumiko Fukui was born in Japan on March 29, 1910. In her youth, she was employed at a pharmaceutical company and, after her work hours, she enjoyed painting and composing haiku as part of the company’s club activities. Furthermore, her longtime hobby was knitting.

In her later years, when she began utilizing daycare services, she took up activities such as origami and paper covering. At the ages of 99 and 104, she displayed her paper coverings in local art exhibitions, earning recognition and awards. Around the age of 97, she underwent surgery for an aneurysm and successfully recovered. By the time she turned 100, she continued to reside at her home while also attending a day care center. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she said, “I do what I like, have fun chatting, and laugh. Also, I move my hands, take walks as much as possible, and eat vegetables every day.”

Fukui passed away of natural causes in Fujita, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, on 29 March 2021, her 111th birthday.

RECOGNITION

On 27 April 2020, following the passing of an anonymous 110-year-old lady from Wakayama City, she became the oldest living person in Wakayama Prefecture. She held the title until her own passing 11 months later, and was succeeded by 109-year-old Ei Nakano.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 3 November 2023.
