BIOGRAPHY

Eugenia Vranti was born in Mytilene, North Aegean Region, Greece (then Ottoman Empire), on 13 February 1906. Her father, Ioannis Hatzidaniel (1850–1912), was a painter and photographer. She was the youngest of eight children. In 1875, her father, along with his brothers, opened a bookstore that enjoyed great success. She grew up surrounded by books in the family bookstore, where literature became an integral part of her life.

From a young age, she stood out for her restless spirit, being the only girl of her time to attend the Practical High School for Boys. She was drawn to the sciences and aspired to study Architecture at the Polytechnic. However, she was never able to realize her dream.

She married Evangelos Vrantis, director of the Commercial Bank, and had two children, Nena and Tzia.

She remained an avid reader well into her later years, continuing to read until around the age of 100. When her eyesight began to fail, she would ask others to read to her.

When asked about the secret to her longevity, her granddaughter, Irene Spanelli, believed that genetics played a significant role. Her sisters also lived well past 100, while her brothers lived into their 90s. She never followed a strict diet. She enjoyed Mediterranean cuisine, frequently ate meat, and never turned down sweets. She traveled often and continued to do so until the age of 90. At 107, she suffered a fall and broke her hip. After undergoing surgery, she managed to recover and walk again.

Eugenia Vranti passed away in Mytilene, North Aegean Region, Greece, on 22 August 2017, at the age of 111 years, 190 days.
