Etsu Nishiura (Japanese: 西浦ヱツ) was a Japanese supercentenarian.

BIOGRAPHY

Etsu Nishiura was born in Japan on 19 February 1905.

In March 2010, at the age of 105, she moved into a residential care home in Yao City, Osaka. On 25 September 2015, at the age of 110, she was visited by Yao City Mayor Seita Tanaka, who presented her with a set of Imabari towels as a gift. Her doctor also gave her a commemorative present. Although Nishiura used a wheelchair to get around, she was reported to be living a healthy and active life at the time. She said that the secret to her longevity was maintaining a grateful heart toward everyone, remarking, “I am grateful for everyone’s kindness.” Her favorite foods were sashimi and sushi.

At the age of 111, when she was informed that she had become the oldest resident of Osaka Prefecture, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “I’m able to stay healthy thanks to everyone around me. I’m so happy.” At the time, it was reported that she ate only breakfast and dinner, slept for long hours, and still looked forward to attending her twice-weekly day care service. She actively participated in all of the programs there, particularly enjoying coloring, and would give her completed coloring pages to family members as gifts. Her daily routine included chanting Buddhist scriptures, reciting sutras twice a day without fail—once after breakfast and again before bed—and reading the newspaper.

Etsu Nishiura passed away in Yao City, Osaka, around 11 July 2017, at the age of 112 years, c.142 days.

RECOGNITION

In April 2016, following the passing of 111-year-old Take Tanaka, she became the oldest known living person in Osaka Prefecture. Upon her own passing, she was likely succeeded by Kaoru Ueda.

Her age was verified by the MHLW, Japan, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 13 February 2017. The validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest.
