Elza de Moura was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil on 4 August 1915. Her father was Anastácio de Moura, a military Lieutenant, who lost his life during the 1932 Revolution. She attended the Escola Normal Modelo, which currently houses the Institute of Education.
Throughout her career, she served as a school principal for 25 years while also pursuing studies in singing and piano. Additionally, de Moura took on roles such as choir conductor and author, publishing science books tailored for children along with essays focusing on literature, music, and education. She attributed much of her professional development to the influence of Russian pedagogue and psychologist Helena Antipoff, renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to education in the state of Minas Gerais. For some time, she worked as a music teacher at the Foundation Helena Antipoff (Portuguese: Fundação Helena Antipoff). The piano displayed at the Foundation, dating back to the 1960s, was the instrument used for her lessons.
Elza de Moura passed away on 11 March 2024, at the age of 108 years, 220 days.
