Elsa Peck (née Schapheer) was a German supercentenarian

BIOGRAPHY

Elsa Peck was born in the Vahrenwald-List district of Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany, on 20 April 1902. Apart from a brief period in Erfurt, she spent her entire life there. After leaving school, Peck completed an apprenticeship as a tailor.

Around 1990, following her husband’s death, she decided to move from her apartment in Vahrenwald to a nursing home. She could no longer carry her shopping bags up to the third floor.

Clothing remained important to her throughout her life: even in old age, her children made sure that she was always well dressed while living in the retirement home. When asked about the secret to a long life, she liked to quote her favorite saying: “A day without laughter easily endangers beauty. It puts wrinkles on your face, so laugh a lot—don’t forget that.”

Elsa Peck passed away in Hanover, Lower Saxony, on 28 January 2014, at the age of 111 years, 283 days. She was survived by her three children, as well as seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
