BIOGRAPHY

Concepción Pichel Sampayo was born in Lalín, Galicia, Spain, on 11 May 1908. She lived in Vilar for more than 80 years, where her husband, Rogelio García, was from. Together, they had seven children: Magín, Sofía, Fidelina, José, Manuel, Nélida, and Jesús.

At the end of 2015, she suffered a fall and broke her hip. This accident prevented her from continuing the household chores she proudly carried out even as a centenarian, such as tending to the farmyard or cooking for herself and her son, Magín. She celebrated her 109th birthday at the family home in Mazarelos, surrounded by three of her seven children. At the time, it was reported that although she spent her mornings in bed and relied on her children and a caregiver for assistance, she still joined the family at the table for meals every day. She also had 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Concepción Pichel Sampayo passed away in Silleda, Galicia, Spain, on 27 November 2018, at the age of 110 years, 200 days.

RECOGNITION

On 13 September 2018, following the passing of 111-year-old Celestina Penabad García, she became the oldest living person in Galicia. She held the title until her own passing in November, when she was succeeded by Ramona Costoyas Rey, who coincidentally also lived in the municipality of Silleda.
