BIOGRAPHY

Carmen Amado Acevedo was born in Amado, Arizona Territory, USA, on 2 January 1909 to a pioneering family after whom her place of birth was named. She was born on the ranch her grandfather received from the King of Spain in the 1880s. Her family moved to Tucson after her mother, Maria de Carmen Amado-Celaya, died in 1920 in the first recorded fatal motor vehicle accident in Arizona.

Her father, Demetrio Amado Ferrer, who studied law and medicine, emphasized education for his daughters, and once the family returned to the ranch, he hired teachers to live with the family and teach them the basics and piano. The family used a building on the ranch as a schoolroom where neighboring children could attend school as well.

While visiting a social club as a chaperone for her cousin, she met her future husband, Cornelio Acevedo, who was on a date with someone else. They dated for four years before marrying in 1935. The couple had one daughter, Marcella. She was a devoted Catholic.

Her husband died in November 1973. She was in a weekly bowling league until she was in her late 80s. She decided to stop driving at age 90. Her older sister died at 101, and her younger brother died at 100.

Carmen Amado Acevedo died in Tucson, Arizona, USA, on 21 June 2019 at the age of 110 years, 170 days. She was survived by her only daughter, Marcella Roberts, two grandchildren, three great-grandsons, and one great-great-granddaughter.
