BIOGRAPHY

Auguste Ehard was born in the village of Trostberg, in what was then the Kingdom of Bavaria, on 12 January 1906. The middle child of three daughters, she could recall seeing Kaiser Wilhelm II during his visit to Trostberg in the early 1910s. In 1925, when she was 19, she moved to the city of Munich. It was here where she developed an interest in hobbies such as hiking, rowing, and playing tennis, and was so busy with these sports that she had never been in a long-term relationship before she met her husband, Franz, whom she married in 1939.

Shortly after her wedding, her husband was drafted into the Wehrmacht, where he spent eight years as a prisoner of war before being allowed to return home. The couple were married until Franz’s death in 1976.

Following the death of her husband, Ehard developed an interest in traveling, and embarked on vacations to various European countries with her sister, including Holland, Hungary, Switzerland, and Italy. During this same time, she began cross country skiing, and participated in the activity until she was 95. She moved into a retirement home at the age of 99, and regularly went for walks until she was 107, when her vision and mobility began to decline.

In 2016, a few weeks after celebrating her 110th birthday, Ehard – recognized as being the oldest living woman in Munich – was visited by 108-year-old Robert Winterstein, who was then the oldest living man in the city.

Auguste Ehard passed away in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, on 22 March 2016, aged of 110 years, 69 days.
