Annie Ingegärd Emilia Sjöström was a Swedish supercentenarian who was the nation’s oldest living resident at the time of her passing.

BIOGRAPHY

Annie Sjöström was born in Gunnarslund on the island of Öland, Kalmar County, Sweden, on 19 December 1914. She grew up in a large family of 12 children. On their croft, they kept a horse, a cow, a pig, and some chickens. By the age of seven, she was already helping her family by milking cows. From an early age, Annie had to work for others, including in the Gerlofsson family household in Lofta. She delivered food to them daily and fed their horses with bread. As a young woman, Annie took on various jobs, working as a nanny, maid, and household helper. She even managed to milk ten cows on her own when the farmer was unwell.

At some point, she married Verner Sjöström, who was from Blekinge. The couple settled there and had two children, a daughter, Ulla, and a son, Rolf. After her husband’s passing in 1977, Annie relocated to Borgholm the following year. Throughout her career, Annie worked in diverse roles, including at the mirror factory in Fröseke, in the Champinjonen discothèque in Borgholm, and in the kitchen at Hotell Borgholm.

Annie Sjöström passed away in Borgholm, Kalmar County, Sweden, on 23 April 2025, at the age of 110.
