BIOGRAPHY

Cástula Orozco Durán was born in San José de Uré, Córdoba Department, Colombia, on 26 March 1916. Her father, Octavio Orozco, passed away when she was just seven months old. Throughout her life, she worked in various roles, including washing clothes, cleaning, helping at the church, and selling rice. She never married and did not have any biological children.

She was named Queen of the Tuna Tambora (Spanish: “Reina de la Tuna Tambora”) in 1981 in recognition of her active involvement in traditional dance, where she performed both as a dancer and a verse singer. From a very young age, she developed a deep passion for dance—especially the tuna dance—which she continued to nurture throughout her life. She has been a member of the Tuna Tambora Cañafístula of the Municipality of Caucasia since its founding.

Even at the age of 109, she continued to dance, played dominoes every day, and attended church every Sunday. She remained physically active, able to walk, and mentally sharp.
