BIOGRAPHY

Chiyo Ogura (小倉千代) was born in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, on 10 November 1915. She and her husband ran a calligraphy supplies store called “Ogura Hakubundo” in Kagoshima City for many years, and they were well known and loved by many local people.

At the age of 75, she attended a folk tale listening event organized by the Kagoshima Folktale Association, where she recalled that it reminded her of the old stories she had been told around the hearth during her childhood.

At the age of 108, the nursing home where she lives in Kagoshima City released photos showing her enjoying beer with edamame as a snack.

On 10 November 2025, she celebrated her 110th birthday at a nursing home in Kagoshima City, and at that time, she was reported to be able to walk with a walker and eat meals independently.

On 2 September 2026, the mayor of Kagoshima City visited the group home where she lives to celebrate her longevity. According to her family, the secret to her longevity is that “she has always been physically strong and has a strong spirit that helps her overcome illness and injury.”

Her age was verified by Kagoshima City, Marco Wikkerink and Masahiro Yamada, and validated by LongeviQuest on 6 January 2026.

In June 2026, following the passing of Sato Sakashita, she became the oldest living person in Kagoshima Prefecture.
