Ida Schlesinger (née Cohen) was an American supercentenarian.
Ida Schlesinger was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, USA, on 7 November 1902, to parents Harry Ellis Cohen and Bessie Zieve. She had four brothers (Henry, William, Philip, and Louis) and three sisters (Helen Sachs, Ann Cohen, and Rose Kahn). She was raised in New Castle and graduated from New Castle High School. She then attended the Kindergarten Training School of Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, Ohio. After completing her studies, she returned to New Castle, where she taught elementary school until her marriage to Marvin A. Kohen, after which she moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio. She was widowed in 1932.
In 1937, she married attorney W. Louis Schlesinger and relocated to Erie, Pennsylvania. They shared 44 years of marriage before his death in 1980. Together, they enjoyed attending concerts, Broadway shows, and other cultural events in Chautauqua, Cleveland, and Toronto. She was an active member of Temple Anshe Hesed, volunteering in the Sunday school, Temple Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, and the Golden Age Club. Her additional affiliations included Hadassah, the Erie County Lawyers’ Wives Association, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Ida Schlesinger passed away in Erie, Pennsylvania, on 3 July 2014, at the age of 111 years, 238 days.
Schlesinger’s age was verified by Robert Young and validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 8 April 2013. The validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest.
