Rosina Neubauer

BIOGRAPHY

Rosina Neubauer was born in Hălchiu, Brașov County, Austria-Hungary (present-day Romania), on 11 October 1909. She was the fifth of six siblings, with five sisters and, two years later, a brother joining the family. When she was seven, her mother passed away, leaving the children half-orphans. Her older sisters took on the responsibility of running the household. At 17, she moved to Bucharest, where one of her older sisters already lived and worked. There, she found a job to support herself. The Protestant church in Bucharest hosted a club called the “Liedertafel,” which offered solidarity and entertainment for the German community working in the city. The club became a popular meeting place for conversations and dancing on weekends. It was there she met Martin Neubauer, a carpenter from Bistritz also working in Bucharest. The two fell in love and married on 28 March 1929. The couple had two daughters: Annemarie, born in 1932, and Rosemarie in 1937.

Having settled well in Bucharest, they decided to remain there. However, during World War II, her husband was deported to Russia in January 1945, leaving her alone to care for their two children. He returned in 1948, arriving home on an ambulance. Her husband passed away unexpectedly in 1973. In 1987, both of her daughters were visiting Germany, and in 1989, as part of a family reunification program, the entire family, including Rosina, relocated to Germany permanently.

In 2012, at the age of 102, she moved into a nursing home in Bensheim. By the time she turned 110, she had three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Rosina Neubauer passed away in Bensheim, Hesse, Germany, on 13 November 2019, at the age of 110 years, 33 days.
