BIOGRAPHY

Else Tostmann was born in Adenstedt, Lower Saxony, Germany on 20 October 1913. She was baptized and confirmed in Adenstedt. In 1939, she married Heinrich Tostmann. According to her, the most terrible experience of her life was a low-level attack over Adenstedt in 1944 during World War II, while she held her daughter Helga in her arms. Her husband never returned from the war. She initially worked in agriculture but later discovered her passion for cooking. According to her daughter, there was hardly a house in the village where she didn’t cook for parties during that time.

In March 2019, at the age of 105, she suffered a femoral neck fracture. While her constitution played a role in her full recovery, it was also due to the excellent surgery and optimal therapy she received, as well as the attentive care from doctors and nursing staff. After her recovery, she was able to walk independently again, but at 110, she required assistance to get to the ground floor. By the time she turned 106, she remarked that she lacked nothing, feeling “surrounded by lovely people, happy and healthy.” With her good eyesight, she regularly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and continued to read the newspaper, staying well-informed about political, economic, and sporting news, despite never having owned a television in her life.

In May 2023, she got back in a car for the first time in 15 years to attend her great-granddaughter’s 18th birthday party, which was located 60 kilometers away. At the age of 110, her eyesight remained sharp, and her voice was strong, although her hearing had diminished slightly since her 100th birthday. At that time, she lived in her daughter Helga’s home, where she had resided for decades and actively participated in all household chores. This continued until she fell and broke her femoral neck. At 110, she had three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and in 2022, she welcomed her first great-great-grandchild.
