Nō Sakai

BIOGRAPHY

Nō Sakai was born Tonami, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, on 1 June 1906, and she lived there throughout her life. She got married in 1939, and the couple went on to have children.

On her 100th birthday, 1 June 2006, the mayor and city council members of Tonami City visited her home and celebrated her longevity. At that time, she received a bouquet of flowers while sitting on a tatami mat in the traditional Japanese seiza position. Her daily routine at the time included weeding the garden, and she said that the secret to her longevity was to limit her meals to when she was 80% full and not to be picky about what she ate.

On 1 June 2016, she celebrated her 110th birthday at a nursing home, where she expressed her gratitude and appreciation.

Sakai passed away in the nursing home where she was residing, on 8 January 2017, at the age of 110 years, 221 days.

RECOGNITION

Following the death of Tsuya Hayashi of Toyama City on 30 November 2016, at the age of 112, Sakai became the oldest living person in Toyama Prefecture.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano, and validated by LongeviQuest on 8 July 2024.
