BIOGRAPHY

Tsuya Hayashi was born on 26 April 1904 in Japan. At the age of 100, she was still living in her own home with her son Minoru, her daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren.

According to her family, Hayashi’s secret to longevity was walking, gymnastics, and a relaxing lifestyle. Her daughter-in-law speculated that the stimulation provided by living with a large family aided in her long life. She enjoyed watching the television during her centenarian years.

Tsuya Hayashi passed away in a Toyama City nursing home on 30 November 2016 at the age of 112 years, 218 days.

RECOGNITION

On Hayashi’s 100th birthday, she was presented with congratulatory gifts from city dignitaries.

Hayashi’s age was verified by Stefan Maglov, as well as Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), and was validated by the GRG on 21 November 2015.

On 16 August 2015, Hayashi became Toyama Prefecture’s oldest resident following the death of 111-year-old Kie Taki. The following year, she broke the longevity record for Toyama held by Sue Hirano and later became the first known person in the prefecture’s history to reach the age of 112.

Upon Hayashi’s death, Toyama’s oldest living person was Nou Sakai, aged 110.
