BIOGRAPHY

Ana Sara Márquez de Ramírez was born in Salamina, Caldas Department, Colombia, on 25 July 1904. Her parents were Rafael Márquez Restrepo and Rosalía Mejía Londoño. She spent the first years of her life in her birthplace, which she remembered as a very happy time. At a young age, her family moved to Armenia, the capital of the Quindío Department, where they settled in the city center. She described her family home as a happy one.

At some point, she married Juan Ramón Ramírez, and they had two children, Gonzalo and Lucila. For as long as she could remember, she worked with people—especially the poor. She lived in the outskirts of the city with a friend named Leticia Ocampo, and together they visited neighborhoods to help those in need. They assisted with personal care, such as cleaning people, changing their clothes, preparing them for injections, and many other tasks. Although she was not a nurse, she worked as an assistant. Aside from this humanitarian work, she did not hold an official job, dedicating herself primarily to being a homemaker.

Ana Sara Márquez de Ramírez passed away in Armenia, Quindío Department, on 27 August 2016, at the age of 112 years, 33 days.

Her younger sister, Ines Cecilia Marquez de Ramirez (2 May 1909 – fl.2 May 2017), outlived her, as was last confirmed alive at the age of 108.

RECOGNITION

On 16 July 2015, following the passing of Elvira Montoya Ordóñez, she became the oldest known living person in Colombia. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Alicia Castillo.

Márquez de Ramírez’s age was verified by Santiago Garcia Medina, Ricardo Pereira Lago, and Anson Davis, and was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 24 November 2015. This validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest. She was the first validated Colombian female supercentenarian, and the second overall, following Daniel Guzmán García.
