Vieno Nurmilaukas, the oldest living person in Finland, passed away in Savitaipale, South Karelia, on 12 April, aged 108 years, 201 days.
Vieno Nurmilaukas was the last known person born in present-day Finland before the Finnish Declaration of Independence from Russia. She was born on 23 September 1917 in the village of Niinimäki, in the municipality of Savitaipale, South Karelia. After marrying Arvi Nurmilaukas in 1943, she moved from her native village to Kaulio. She spent her entire life as a housewife.
In July 2025, following the passing of 108-year-old Helena Honkanen of Uusimaa, she became the oldest known living person in Finland.
