Irene Lantz, the second-oldest person in Canada, passed away in Edmonton, Alberta, on 24 October, at the age of 111 years, 236 days.

Lantz was born on the family farm in Wroxton, Saskatchewan, Canada, on 2 March 1914. She was the fifth of 14 children born to parents Fred and Katie Perpeluk.

She married Carl “Mickey” North in 1936 and lived on small farms near Calgary before moving to Jasper Place and later South Edmonton. She and her husband supported their family through photography, poultry, and egg sales. Known for her love of gardening, fishing, and healthy living, Irene made her own yogurt and apple wine, and stayed active through dancing and public transit well into her later years. After her husband’s death in 1984 and her son’s in 1997, she lived independently for many years before marrying Tony Lantz in 2002, warmly embracing his large family.

At 104, she moved to Canterbury Foundation care home, remaining active and independent. Her family credited her long life to her kindness, non-judgmental attitude, and ability to find joy in every moment.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Irene Lantz, during this difficult time.
