Carlotta Elise Strickland, the oldest known living person in Barbados, passed away in St. Lucy on 24 January, at the age of 109 years, 201 days, according to the Earl’s Funeral Home.

Strickland was born in Flatfield, St. Lucy, on 7 July 1915, to parents Clifton Strickland and Albertha White. She attended St. Swithins’ Girls’ School but left at an early age to work as a laborer at Hope Plantation. Later, she became a domestic worker for the parents of former Deputy Prime Minister Sir Philip Greaves in Northumberland, St. Lucy.

Eventually, Carolotta settled on Hope Road in the same parish, where she sold snacks and other items outside her home. In her free time, she enjoyed attending dances at the former Silver Beach Club in St. James. Though she never married, she had one daughter, Eleanor.

Following the passing of 108-year-old Winston Richardson (30 December 1914 – 31 January 2023), she became the oldest known living person in Barbados. However, this was not publicly known until her obituary was released. In January, it was believed that the nation’s oldest living resident was Hermione Eileen Parris, who now likely succeeds Strickland.
