Dumitru Curta, the oldest living man in Sweden and the entire Nordic region, passed away in Kälarne, Jämtland County, on 1 January, at the age of 108 years, 67 days. His passing was confirmed by Östersunds-Posten.

Curta was born in Romania on 26 October 1916. During World War II, Dumitru was drafted into the army for a few months, but for the majority of the war, he was able to continue working as a typographer.

In 1974, he arrived in Malmö from a refugee camp in Austria. A year earlier, he had left his homeland due to the difficult political situation, seeking a new future in Sweden. Initially, he lived in Austria before moving on to Sweden. After four years, his family was able to join him, and upon arriving in Sweden, he secured a job as a typographer in Rydaholm. The family, which included his wife Maria and their son Nick, settled into their new life. Nick, a talented music teacher, had a career that required the family to move around Sweden. In the early 1990s, they relocated to Kälarne.

Curta became the oldest known living man in Sweden, following the passing of 108-year-old Sixten Rudengren on 22 November 2023.

Following his passing, the title of Sweden’s oldest living man is likely to pass to Rafael Södergrann, a resident of Sundsvall, who was born on 3 December 1917, and is now 107 years old.
