Claudia Baccarini, the oldest living person in Italy, and the third-oldest in Europe, passed away in Faenza, Emilia-Romagna, on 24 December, at the age of 114 years, 72 days.
Claudia Baccarini was born in Faenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy on 13 October 1910. At some point, she married Pietro Baldi, who served as the Mayor of Faenza from 1951 to 1956. The couple had 10 children between 1935 and 1953. Her husband passed away in 1998.
In 2021, she was still in good health, attending mass every afternoon, and still mentally sharp, despite facing some vision problems. It was reported that she consistently consumed light meals, accompanied by moderate amounts of wine, and that she had never smoked.
On 17 November 2023, following the death of 113-year-old Domenica Ercolani, she became the oldest living person in Italy. She held the title for more than a year, until her own passing. She is now succeeded by Lucia Laura Sangenito of Campania.
At the time of her passing, she was the third-oldest living person in Europe, after Ethel Caterham and Marie-Rose Tessier.
Baccarini is the sixth-oldest person to have ever died in Italy.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Claudia Baccarini during this difficult time.
